About This Site
This is an independent guide to general contractor licensing in North Carolina. It exists because the rules are spread across a statute, an administrative code, a testing vendor’s bulletin and a board’s website, and almost nobody needs to read all four — they need the answer.
Editorial standards
Everything here is built on a single practice, and it is the reason to trust the site or not.
- Every regulatory fact is checked against a primary source — the North Carolina General Statutes, the North Carolina Administrative Code, material published by the licensing board itself, or the examination vendor’s published Candidate Information Bulletin, which is where the Board sends candidates for exam mechanics. Never against another website or a summary of one.
- Every fact is cited, and the citation is the point. Where the source can be quoted, it is quoted. You should never have to take our word for a fee, a deadline or a penalty: follow the reference and read the same words we did.
- Each check is recorded with the quote or precise reference it rests on, the source, and the date it was checked.
- Pages carrying regulatory facts show a “Last checked” date. That date is when the page’s facts were last read against their sources, not when the page was last edited. If it looks stale, treat it as stale.
- Where a figure cannot be pinned down, we say so and point at the official source rather than printing a number that might be wrong. There is at least one fee on this site treated exactly that way, deliberately.
- Where there is no official source at all, or the answer depends on how a rule should be interpreted rather than on what it says, we do not cover it. We would rather leave a question unanswered than answer it from inference.
- Nothing is written from memory or inferred from how another state does it. Two states’ rules are unrelated even when they look similar, and carrying a figure across is how a wrong number gets published.
We would rather leave a gap than fill it with something plausible.
What this site will not do
- This site is not affiliated with the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors, or with any state agency, and has not been reviewed or endorsed by one.
- This site describes what the rules say; it is not legal advice. Everything here describes how the rules work in general. It is not advice about your license, your project or your company, and reading it creates no professional relationship. Where your situation turns on the specifics, that is a question for someone qualified to answer it.
- This site does not process applications, issue licenses, or speak to the Board on anyone’s behalf.
No bylines
Pages here carry no named author, and that is deliberate rather than an omission. The claim being made is about the process — that a primary source was checked and dated — not about an individual’s credentials. Attaching a name would imply a professional opinion, and a professional opinion is precisely what this site does not offer.
Corrections
Rules change, and pages go out of date between checks. If something here is wrong, we would rather know: the address is on the contact page, and a correction is the most useful mail we get.
If you would rather see the working than the promise, start from the North Carolina contractor license overview and follow a citation.
